Pwllheli Triathlon

The 2011 Pwllheli Triathlon takes place this Sunday (27th March) and I’ve signed up to do it. I did quite a few triathlons ‘in my youth’ and then was talked into doing the Wotton Triathlon for charity last year by my sister. I quite enjoyed doing it again so thought I’d start doing a few here and there again just to see how it goes.

I’m nowhere near as fast as I used to be. In fact I’m slower by quite a long way in all three disciplines. Hopefully the fact that I won’t actually be competitive and up there at the sharp end of the field will mean that I can just enjoy the day rather than feeling as though I have to be at the top of my game and performing at a certain level.

The Pwllheli Triathlon is only a sprint distance event with a 400m pool swim, a 12  mile cycle and a 3 mile run. It’s not a huge event either, but it isn’t tiny, with 180 people entered. From what I’ve read, it sounds like a nice course with a fairly flat bike ride and a completely flat run next to the beach and harbour.

Looking at last years results and photos, it looks as though there was a good spread of abilities too. Up at the top end of the field were some pretty fast competitors, finishing the whole event in just over an hour. An average time seemed to be about 1 hour 30 and towards the slower end, people were taking close to 2 hours to finish. It’s difficult to know exactly how long I’ll take as I’ve done very little riding on my new road bike so don’t really know what pace I’ll be riding at. Actually, I haven’t done much swimming or running really so it’ll be interesting to see how well I go. I’ll probably waste more time than I should in the transitions as well. I do have an idea of my times, but don’t think I’ll share them here yet just in case I fail miserably to achieve them.

If you’re there for the event, I’m ‘competitor’ Number 8 so give me a cheer as I ‘whizz’ past!

Couldn’t sleep last night so was up at 3am – And why? Because my right hamstring hurts. It’s been tight for a couple of weeks now, but right now feels as though it is about to go TWANG at ny minute. Lets hope it holds out for Sunday’s race.
