Dyfi Enduro 2010 – Tyre Choice

I’ve decided I need some new tyres ready for the Dyfi Enduro.

Currently my Commnencal Meta 5.5 has a 2.4″ Continental Mountain King on the rear and a 2.35″ Maxxis High Roller on the front. Both are OK for general trail riding but a little too chunky for a longer distance ride such as the Dyfi Enduro and pretty draggy on the climbs… I think I need to make life a little easier for myself on the ups and go with something a little narrower and with a lower rolling resistance.

Haven’t decided what to get yet though… 2.2″ Continental Rubber Queens could be a good option as I still need a fair bit of grip for the descents. Anyone got any recommendations?

I did the Dyfi on Halo ChoirMasters last year which seemed spot on, if dry would be using Small Block 8’s (ta for ff)

I shall be using some rather worn 2.0 specialized captains.. They’re like slicks! I reckon the descents wont be that fast?

How about putting the mountain king on the front and getting a speed king for the rear? Or get 2x mountain kings, both sizes?

Not going to Dyfi this year but liked the JonesXR tyres that came with the Fuel EX9, as long as it was not too sloppy.

2.2 rubber queens are big! I’m probably running one on the front and a race king or speed king on the rear.

If conditions are anything like the last few races I’ve been in, any muddy uphill and bike will be on my back anyway! 😉

Don’t get Continental Speed King 2.1s, they are light and fast, but rubbish on wet trails

There was some good reviews on tyres in the April addition of MBUK. Top rated were Continental Rubber Queen Black Chili. Bit expensive though. I ride Nobby Nic which are very good although very grippy and drag over long distances.

If doing a longer distance I go for something light and fast rolling on the rear. Then something with a bit of control on the front.
Last merida I ran a raceking the rear with a nevgal on the front needed lots of respect on the grassy downhills to avoid losing the back under braking.

I had a rummage in the shed and now have 2.2″ Mountain Kings front and rear so will see how that feels. They are a little old so I’m not sure how well they’ll withstand the sharp rocks of the Dyfi as they look as though they’ve had a bit of run in with them already!

I took them off the hardtail which now looks pretty fast with a Maxxis Larsen TT on the front and a Specialized Fasttrack on the rear.

Yep, Shem tried to convince me to go for Conti Veticals too… They are cheaper than the others as well… Think I’ll stick with my Mountain Kings for now though as they are on the bike and ready to go.

Might try some Verticals next though.
