In reply to <a href="https://www.alananna.co.uk/blog/2020/04/beekeeping-hardware-maintenance/#comment-53923">Russ</a>.

Thanks Russ, we have been thinking about poly hives ourselves for a while, but as you say they do lack that rustic charm. Especially as here they would need to be weighed down with a big pile of house bricks and tied to several breeze blocks too!!

Definitely worth a try though as they probably perform better from a insulating and weatherproofing point of view as well.

Hope all is well with you - I presume that like us you had kind of been practising for self-isolation for several years already! :)

Hi Alan
I've got a mix of self built ply hives and wooden. A couple of years ago I got hold of a poly hive, I'd admit it lacks a certain rustic charm but I'd have to say they are really good. My bees do very well in them and the hives/parts tend to be cheaper and so far seem to last longer than some of the cheaper wooden ones - particularly the ply.
We are really wet/damp here and no matter what I do the wooden ones just seem to get really smelly and rotten as they age. Might be worth and experiment?
Anyway hope you are well!
