Latest news on the swim route is that it will start from the southern side of the jetty, swim out to a buoy moored just off pier rocks but not too far out, swim back to the northern side of the jetty and then run around and under the jetty before swimming out to the buoy again, across the bay and back in by the bandstand. That should give a total swim distance of 750m but without the need to ventrue out into deeper, choppier waters.

It should therefore be ideal for all levels of triathlete, even those with little open water swim experience.
