{"id":6865,"date":"2011-01-13T09:45:43","date_gmt":"2011-01-13T09:45:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.alananna.co.uk\/blog\/?p=6865"},"modified":"2011-01-13T09:45:43","modified_gmt":"2011-01-13T09:45:43","slug":"winter-takes-its-toll","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.alananna.co.uk\/blog\/2011\/01\/winter-takes-its-toll\/","title":{"rendered":"Winter Takes its Toll"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve always had a <a title=\"Ynyslas Palm Trees\" href=\"https:\/\/www.alananna.co.uk\/blog\/2009\/ynyslas-palm-trees\/\">vision of planting lots of Cordylines<\/a> (also known as Manx or Cabbage Palms) along the road here as I think it would enhance the seaside feel with a slightly tropical touch. \u00a0We&#8217;ve planted a few ourselves, other neighbiours already have some and we&#8217;ve even bought some as presents for other locals so that they could plant them in their gardens too.<\/p>\n<p>All was going well and the palms were coming on well. The usual\u00a0<a title=\"Coastal Gardening - wind\" href=\"https:\/\/www.alananna.co.uk\/blog\/2008\/coastal-gardening-wind\/\">challenges\u00a0for plants<\/a> here are the very strong winds and the salt spray, both of which the palm trees cope with very well. In fact, they seem to thrive under those conditions. They don&#8217;t seem to cope so well with the cold though and the coldest December on record seems to have wreaked havoc with them.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6866\" style=\"width: 100px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a title=\"Frost damaged Palm Tree\" rel=\"lightbox\" href=\"https:\/\/www.alananna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/our_palm.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6866\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-6866 \" title=\"our_palm\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alananna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/our_palm-90x120.jpg\" alt=\"Palm Tree\" width=\"90\" height=\"120\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.alananna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/our_palm-90x120.jpg 90w, https:\/\/www.alananna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/our_palm-300x400.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.alananna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/our_palm.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 90px) 100vw, 90px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6866\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Frost damaged Palm Tree<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Our largest palm was doing really well this year, it was about 8 foot tall and have flowered for the first time resulting in it branching into about 5 separate branches. I was looking forward to see it develop into a majestic looking tree this summer. It seemed to put up with the cold temperatures for a while but the prolonged cold snap was just too much for it and it is now a limp, sorry looking specimen that may not survive.<\/p>\n<p>It might pull through I suppose as I have cut one back completely before and it has sprouted from the base so there is some hope but I think it&#8217;ll be a while before \u00a0it can be called &#8216;majestic&#8217; again.<\/p>\n<p>Ours isn&#8217;t the only one to suffer either.
