Yesterday afternoon’s stroll over to the beach here at\u00a0Ynyslas\u00a0brought an unexpected surprise. Out across the water, the distant outline of the\u00a0Ll?n Peninsula\u00a0appeared to be floating above the sea \u2014 stretched, distorted, and shimmering in the warm haze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was a classic Fata Morgana mirage, caused by layers of warm and cool air bending the light over the horizon. Features that would normally sit hidden below the curvature of the Earth suddenly became visible, lifted into view and reflected upside down above the landmasses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although mirages are often associated with deserts and hot roads, coastal temperature inversions can create some of the most dramatic examples. Seeing the Ll?n Peninsula apparently floating, upside down above itself across Cardigan Bay was a reminder that even familiar landscapes can still produce something extraordinary under the right conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n
