{"id":48226,"date":"2026-05-05T13:58:21","date_gmt":"2026-05-05T12:58:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.alananna.co.uk\/blog\/?p=48226"},"modified":"2026-04-23T14:04:29","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T13:04:29","slug":"maximising-export","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.alananna.co.uk\/blog\/2026\/05\/maximising-export\/","title":{"rendered":"Maximising Export"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We used to try to maximise using as much of our own solar power as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It made sense at the time \u2014 run the washing machine, charge the battery, power the house and the car directly from solar, and avoid exporting it back to the grid for little or no return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But things have changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u2019re now on an <a href=\"https:\/\/share.octopus.energy\/obtuse-pearl-419\">Octopus<\/a> EV tariff that pays\u00a0<strong>12p per kWh for exported electricity<\/strong>, and gives us electrcity overnight at just\u00a0<strong>3.49p per kWh<\/strong>. And that completely flips the logic on its head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of trying to use all our solar, it now makes far more sense to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>buy electricity cheaply overnight<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and sell as much solar as possible back to the grid at a higher rate<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It feels slightly backwards \u2014 buying electricity so we can sell sunshine \u2014 but the numbers don\u2019t lie!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How it works<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our setup now runs roughly like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>11:30pm (cheap rate starts):<\/strong>\u00a0We charge the battery from the grid at 3.49p\/kWh<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Around midnight:<\/strong>\u00a0The battery is usually full<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Overnight:<\/strong>\u00a0The house draws a small amount from the grid (all at cheap rate)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>5:30am:<\/strong>\u00a0We switch to running off the battery<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Morning onwards:<\/strong>\u00a0Solar starts generating\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>First it tops up the battery<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Once full, everything else is exported to the grid<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Evening:<\/strong>\u00a0The battery powers the house again<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Then the cycle repeats<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The result is a really clean import\/export pattern \u2014 and importantly, we\u2019re exporting almost all of our solar generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"591\" height=\"968\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alananna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/IMG_6709.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-48227\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.alananna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/IMG_6709.jpg 591w, https:\/\/www.alananna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/IMG_6709-122x200.jpg 122w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 591px) 100vw, 591px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the example day shown above,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Imported:<\/strong>\u00a06.9 kWh \u00d7 3.49p =\u00a0<strong>24.1p<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Exported:<\/strong>\u00a020.7 kWh \u00d7 12p =\u00a0<strong>248.4p<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Net gain: \u00a32.24 for the day<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not bad for a small system that was only ever supposed to keep costs down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The takeaway<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019ve got solar and a battery, it\u2019s well worth checking whether your tariff setup is actually working in your favour. The instinct is often to use as much of your own solar as possible \u2014 but if your export rate is higher than your import rate, the smarter move might be to do the opposite.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We used to try to maximise using as much of our own solar power as possible.
