It was the first day back at work after the Christmas break \u2014 if you ignore the work I did on Friday. We had good intentions of heading into the office to catch up, both with the tasks that had built up over the break and with colleagues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We set off at 7:30 am in the darkness, with snow already covering the roads. It was snowing heavily and only getting worse. Our road was completely white, and our tyre tracks were being filled in almost as quickly as we made them. I\u2019d expected things to improve once we reached the main B-road, but that wasn\u2019t the case. It too was white and slippery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the snow intensifying, we didn\u2019t really fancy risking the hills and twisty roads beyond Borth. Getting stranded somewhere \u2014 or pranging the car \u2014 didn\u2019t seem like a great way to start the working year. If we were going to get snowed in, better to be snowed in at home than at work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So we abandoned the attempt, made a cautious U-turn, and headed back through near-blizzard conditions. <\/p>\n\n\n

Once there was some light, the garden was looking lovely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later, the University sent out an email advising people to work from home rather than risk driving. In my case, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. I got a lot done: worked through a backlog of tasks, joined a few online meetings, and made decent headway overall. I\u2019m not sure Anna was quite so keen \u2014 exams start this week and she has to coordinate them \u2014 but at least the power stayed on, and the broadband behaved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I went for a short walk at lunchtime and the road was still white and slippery. In spite of everything, it did look rather lovely out there, wrapped in snow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
