There isn\u2019t a huge amount of choice in Aberystwyth, and since we\u2019ve loved the Kona, it made sense to stick with what we knew. We did research a few other options, but nothing else offered quite the same value for money and feature set as the Hyundai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u2019ve also really enjoyed owning and driving an electric car, so we only looked at EVs\u2014if we can help it, we won\u2019t be going back to a fossil-fuelled vehicle. The EV is much cheaper to run\u2014often free in the summer if the sun is shining\u2014it&#8217;s lovely to drive, and far more convenient. We can charge it at home, we never have to visit a petrol station, and we love the one-pedal driving, regenerative braking, and all the other benefits that come with electric vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The only downside to the Kona was the slightly small boot\u2014but that\u2019s been improved in the new version, making it an obvious contender. The exterior has also been restyled, and it includes a few new features throughout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The other serious option was the Ioniq 5. It\u2019s a slightly larger car with loads more room inside. We test-drove one for a weekend and discovered it could easily accommodate pretty much all of my windsurfing kit! It also has a more futuristic design, and overall we preferred its look\u2014particularly in the Premium version, which featured colour-matched wheel arches, a nice paint finish, and extras like heated rear seats, wireless phone charging, rear-window shades, a sliding centre console, electric tailgate, and electric seats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the Ioniq 5 having a higher list price\u2014even in its base \u2018Advance\u2019 spec\u2014it turned out to be&nbsp;<em>cheaper<\/em>&nbsp;than the Kona on a lease. That\u2019s because lease costs take into account the residual value of the car at the end of the lease, and the Ioniq 5 holds its value better. So, strangely, we could get the bigger, more expensive car for a lower monthly cost on identical lease terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It wasn\u2019t a completely straightforward decision, though, as it meant a few compromises. We&#8217;d miss the wireless phone charging (although to be fair, it never worked particularly well), and we couldn\u2019t choose our colour. Well, we\u00a0<em>could<\/em>\u2014but doing so would push the car\u2019s list price over the luxury car threshold, triggering the additional EV tax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vehicle tax rules for EVs have changed recently. They used to be tax-free, but not anymore. The standard rate is now \u00a3195, and if the list price exceeds \u00a340,000, there\u2019s an additional \u2018expensive car supplement\u2019 of \u00a3425 per year. That meant we could have the car in \u2018Ultimate Red\u2019 and stay under the threshold, but choosing white, grey, black, blue\u2014or really&nbsp;<em>any<\/em> other colour\u2014would have cost us around \u00a32,000 extra over the lease term. We couldn\u2019t justify that just for a nicer colour, so we stuck with the Ultimate Red. I haven\u2019t seen it in person yet and I\u2019m not 100% convinced\u2014especially with the contrasting wheel arches\u2014but I\u2019m sure it\u2019ll be fine.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alananna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Ioniq-5.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alananna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Ioniq-5.jpeg\" alt=\"Ioniq 5 in Ultimate Red\" class=\"wp-image-46390\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.alananna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Ioniq-5.jpeg 1920w, https:\/\/www.alananna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Ioniq-5-200x113.jpeg 200w, https:\/\/www.alananna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Ioniq-5-1536x864.jpeg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Ioniq 5 in Ultimate Red<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Overall, it feels like an upgrade. It\u2019s a newer model with updated tech, extra features, and a lot more interior space. It also charges much faster on rapid chargers\u2014going from 10% to 80% in just 18 minutes. Not that the Kona\u2019s slower charging was ever much of an issue, but it\u2019s nice to know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As for speed, the Ioniq 5 is a heavier car and a little slower. Our Kona was ridiculously quick, doing 0\u201360 in under 6 seconds. The Ioniq 5 manages it in 8.5 seconds\u2014not quite the same thrill, but still nippy.
