Windsurfing kit doesn\u2019t come cheap. I rarely \u2014 if ever \u2014 buy brand-new gear, and some of my boards, sails, and accessories are probably more than 20 years old. But it\u2019s still nice to keep up with the times where I can.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The relatively new 2021 Severne Nano 87 that I bought a few years ago never really worked for me. It was a nice board to sail on its day, but in typical onshore conditions at Borth and Ynyslas, it just didn\u2019t cut it. When I first got it, I struggled to get it to grip and track in a straight line \u2014 there was just no bite from the fins. I swapped out fins and eventually got it working OK, but it still needed to be well powered up and didn\u2019t have much upwind performance. Not ideal for getting out through dead-onshore, mushy waves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, I finally gave up on it and decided to trade it in. After a bit of research and shopping around, I went for a second-hand JP Magic Wave 89. It\u2019s slightly longer, better suited to onshore conditions, and has a thruster setup instead of quad fins \u2014 so it should offer more grip and better upwind performance. Time will tell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Getting Older, Going Bigger?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

While I was looking, I also started toying with the idea of a larger board to get me out in lighter winds. Historically, I haven\u2019t really bothered with anything below 25 knots. Living right on the beach has always meant I could afford to wait for the good days \u2014 light-wind sessions were usually just an excuse to rest or do something else!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But now that I\u2019m a bit older and usually sailing solo, I don\u2019t head out when it\u2019s completely mad anymore. It used to be that no wind was too strong or too wild, but these days I tend to skip the full-on carnage sessions. So maybe extending my range down into the lighter wind days would be a good thing \u2014 letting me sail in less extreme conditions, more often.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With that in mind, I started looking for some suitable \u2018big kit\u2019. I didn\u2019t want an old man\u2019s setup \u2014 I still want performance and a bit of excitement \u2014 but a full-on slalom board would be a bit much for the sea and choppy coastal conditions. So I looked into freerace boards and ended up going for a 2022 Goya Bolt 127. Hopefully, it\u2019ll deliver near-slalom levels of speed and performance, but in a slightly more accessible and controllable package.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That said, it\u2019s still the biggest board I\u2019ve ever owned (aside from the old Dufour Wing I learned on in the 1980s). At nearly 75 cm wide, it\u2019s quite a beast. Paired with the 6.7 m\u00b2 Gun Sails Rapid I already have, it should get me going in 15 knots and still be pretty exciting at 20!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Filling the Gaps<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Of course, one sail isn\u2019t enough. The 6.7 m\u00b2 should power the Goya Bolt nicely, but it\u2019s fairly old and a bit of a jump from my 5.7 m\u00b2. So I figured a 6.2 m\u00b2 freerace sail would fill the gap perfectly \u2014 enter the 2023 Duotone E-Pace HD. If I like these lighter wind sessions, who knows? A 7.5 m\u00b2 might be on the cards too \u2014 though that would mean a new mast and boom as well\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With my mind made up, I headed inland, met up with Steve, and made our way to Boardwise. While I was there, I also ended up buying a snowboard for Morgan and a new set of harness lines \u2014 so it turned out to be a rather expensive day out!<\/p>\n\n\n
