{"id":4279,"date":"2010-04-18T06:39:07","date_gmt":"2010-04-18T05:39:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.alananna.co.uk\/blog\/?p=4279"},"modified":"2010-04-18T06:39:07","modified_gmt":"2010-04-18T05:39:07","slug":"bird-id-for-beginners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.alananna.co.uk\/blog\/2010\/04\/bird-id-for-beginners\/","title":{"rendered":"Bird ID for beginners"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It feels as though summer is here and as a new member of the RSPB I thought I&#8217;d make use of my membership and attend some of the &#8216;courses&#8217; at Ynyshir, our local RSPB reserve.<\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s course was &#8216;Bird Identification for Beginners&#8217; run by Caroline. My bird ID isn&#8217;t bad but you can always learn something from such things so I went along. Also on the &#8216;course&#8217; was Diane. Bascially we wandered around the reserve in the sunshine, with Caroline giving us some of her expert knowledge. She showed us not only on where to find certain birds but also helped with the ID of them.<\/p>\n<p>It was actually really good. I was able to identify everything that we saw, but with Caroline helping us to look in the right places and without Morgan in tow I was able to see much more than I usually would.<\/p>\n<p>We started off with some obvious birds on the feeders by the visitor centre:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Chaffinches<\/li>\n<li>Greenfinches<\/li>\n<li>Blue Tits<\/li>\n<li>Great Tits<\/li>\n<li>Coal Tits<\/li>\n<li>Goldfinch<\/li>\n<li>Goldcrest<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We then moved off into the woodland where we saw:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Redstart<\/li>\n<li>Willow Warbler<\/li>\n<li>Long-tailed Tit<\/li>\n<li>Robin<\/li>\n<li>Wren<\/li>\n<li>Treecreeper<\/li>\n<li>Nuthatch<\/li>\n<li>Chiff Chaff<\/li>\n<li>Pied Flycatcher<\/li>\n<li>Blackbird<\/li>\n<li>Mistle Thrush<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We then went down to the estuary hide where we could see:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Canada Geese<\/li>\n<li>Little Egret<\/li>\n<li>Herring Gull<\/li>\n<li>Great Black-backed Gull<\/li>\n<li>Redshank<\/li>\n<li>Shelduck<\/li>\n<li>Moorhen<\/li>\n<li>Oyster Catcher<\/li>\n<li>Grey Heron<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>and on the way there a couple of<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Reed Bunting<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Not a bad selection of birds in less than a couple of hours and some that I certainly wouldn&#8217;t have seen had I been on my own.
