I think I’ve mentioned in passing that I have a finger infection. Who’d have thought that a simple, small area of infection could cause so much agro!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’m not even sure where it came from, possibly gardening, but the middle finger on my right hand was a little sore early last week. I didn’t think much of it as I’m always getting thorns in fingers whilst gardening or knocking them whilst doing chores, windsurfing etc etc. However, it started getting a little worse, started swelling up and then had a build-up of pus under it. It was tiny but must have been hurting as I felt the need to take a photo of it!<\/p>\n\n\n

After a few days it didn’t seem to be getting any better so I thought a quick trip to the doctors was needed to get it lanced and get some antibiotics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I made an appointment on Thursday, and sure enough, that’s exactly what they did. They lanced it, drained the pus from it and put me on a course of antibiotics. I was told to go back on Monday if it hadn’t improved or if things got worse.<\/p>\n\n\n

Things did get worse. On Saturday it was agony and had spread to a swelling at the base of my finger, the back of my hand and the outside of my forearm was red and sore. I phoned 111 who contacted the out-of-hours GP who wanted me to pop into the hospital to see her. She took one look at it and sent me to A&E where they decided against lancing it again as they didn’t want to risk introducing any more infection. They did increase the dose of antibiotics I was on and took some blood samples etc. Eventually, they sent me home with the same instructions.<\/p>\n\n\n

It doesn’t ever look that bad and it’s only small but it’s a right pain and pretty inconvenient. You wouldn’t think such an innocent looking ‘injury’ would cause so much trouble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It did continue getting a little worse and was quite painful on Sunday evening. The tenderness had extended up into my upper arm and armpit too. I was thinking that I’d have to go back yet again but it seems to have stabilised today (Monday). The finger itself hasn’t improved at all but my arm isn’t quite so sore. Hopefully, the increased antibiotics have kicked in. I would say “fingers crossed” it’ll be better by next week as I’m supposed to be scrambling in North Wales and then heading off to Norway for some sea-kayaking… The trouble is I can’t actually cross my fingers at the moment!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
