The original plan was to play in the surf on New Years Eve and hopefully with a few friends from North Wales Surf Ski Paddlers as well. Not many could make it though and some of those that could were ill so it was just going to be me and Mark. Even that didn’t quite go to plan. Mark managed to break his surf ski whilst manouvering it in his garage so didn’t have a boat that he could use in the waves. Plans were changed and we decided that a paddle up the estuary would do for the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The previous day’s paddle had also been in the estuary for me and with no wind, sunshine and mirror smooth waters it was lovely. News Year Day dawned colder, cloudier and with a brisk NE wind though. Not the best of conditions for the estuary as there would be some chop to contend with but it was nothing too extreme so we were still on for a paddle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We did take a quick look at the surf which was looking perfect but then headed to the estuary and set off first towards Aberdyfi. From here we followed the northern shore of the estuary all the way to Glandyfi. There were a couple of other people out on sit-on-top kayaks but other than that the only people were saw were those on the train as it trundled along just above the waters of the estuary. In fact, there wasn’t much to see at all. Low clouds shrouded the hills and the only movement was from flocks of oyster catchers and a number of pure white Little Egrets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We stopped briefly at Glandyfi for a drink but it was a little chilly so we didn’t linger long. The tide had already turned so we were soon back on the water for a return trip with the tide to assist us and the wind at our backs. The return trip was a little easier going until we turned towards Ynyslas where the side chop made things a little trickier. All followed by a bit of a slog against the tide back to the car park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
