Lynx in Borth – Middle-Sized Cat Tracking

Maybe this is just the excuse that we need for Half-Term. Perhaps I can encourage Morgan to get off minecraft on his computer and come middle-sized cat tracking today!

News from the BBC:

A lynx has escaped from a wildlife park in Ceredigion.

The Eurasian lynx, which is about twice the size of a domestic cat, escaped from Borth Wild Animal Kingdom, near Aberystwyth.

Police said they have been told the animal went missing some time during the last five days.

If the animal is seen, people are asked to contact the zoo park directly or the police.

Dyfed-Powys Police said the public in the area should be “alert and vigilant”.

“The lynx is unlikely to approach people, but may attempt to take livestock or pets as food,” said a force spokeswoman.

“We do however advise that the animal should not be approached as it could become aggressive if cornered.

“It is believed that the lynx remains in fairly close proximity to the Animalarium, but of course it could potentially go further afield.”

It’s not as big a deal as people are making out of course – except for the fact that the Animalarium has managed to let it escape. The Lynx itself is unlikely to be any risk. In fact there have been plans to reintroduce lynx into the UK anyway.

In 2015, the Lynx UK Trust put out a plea for anyone who would be willing to allow their land to be used.

Its chief scientific advisor, Dr Paul O’Donoghue, said five sites in mid Wales came forward and it would consider their merits in future.

But the National Sheep Association said it did not want “high-level predators released in our countryside”.

The Lynx UK Trust has submitted plans to reintroduce the Eurasian lynx to Kielder Forest in Northumberland on a five-year trial period.

If approved, it would import six of the cats from Sweden. It is also consulting on two sites in Scotland.

The trust also asked landowners in Wales if they would be happy to allow lynx to roam their properties.

According to the Lynx UK Trust, reintroducing the animals will “generate millions” in tourism. Maybe it’s a ploy by Ceredigion Tourism. As long as they don’t let the lions escape we’ll be OK.
