Sunset Timelapse

After all of the Timelapse photography with our new drive being built I thought I’d try some of a sunset. We do get amazing sunsets here so why not try to record some and share them with the world. Sunday was a gorgeous day and after a hectic weekend we finally had a bit of downtime so Anna and I wandered over to the beach where I set up my GoPro and got recording.

I had it set to take a photo every 10 seconds and on the  7MP and wide setting. It seemed to work quite well, but I’m not that happy with the results. The problem is that the GoPro obviously adjusts the exposure automatically and therefore changes the exposure for each photo that it takes. This means that as the sun sets and dusk falls, the GoPro will either slow down the shutter speed or open up the aperture to allow more light in and therefore tends to keep the overall exposure of each shot about the same. This makes it look as though the ambient light conditions stay the same when in fact they gradually get darker as the sun sets.

The GoPro does have ProTune setting that will apparently allow you to control Color, ISO Limit, Sharpness and Exposure. It doesn’t however seem to allow actual manual control of exposure as the ‘Exposure’ settings are actually exposure compensation settings not actual Aperture or Shutter Speed controls. The GoPro does have a ‘Night lapse’ mode though that does seem to allow you to set a shutter speed, but the only options are 2 secs or longer which will probably be a little too long for the effect I want to achieve. More experimenting is required and more cold evening sat on the beach doing so.

It might not have been the most successful timeplapse of a sunset as the colours never really got that good, but it was quite nice just chilling on the beach with Anna for half an hour or so.
