Finishing the Lean-to Build – Hot Work

Tuesday was an absolute scorcher here. It started off hot and just got hotter with the temperatures eventually maxing out at 32.8ºC. The hottest day so far in 2016 and not far off our ‘all-time’ record of 33.7ºC set on 19th July 2016.  Typically, I had lots of hot work planned for the day, finishing off the lean-to build that we’ve been working on. I had to wait for 2 tonnes of gravel to arrive so had chance to clean the house, do lots of gardening and then make a hot and sweaty inspection of the bees.

Gravelling – The final piece of the Lean-to Build

The gravel arrived while I was inspecting the bees, so suitably hot and sweaty I was able to start the real work of the day – manually shifting 2 tonnes of gravel. The first task was to lay a nice weed-control carpet. Even this was hot work in the sweltering heat under the roof of the lean-to.

Next was shovelling the gravel into a wheelbarrow and moving it to the lean-to, tipping it out and raking it over. It certainly looked neat and tidy once I’d finished though. It almost seems a shame to fill it up.

A Useful Lean-to

I then played around with the drainpipes and water-butts so that they were finished off.

Next I started filling it up by returning the Surf Ski and putting the canoe under it. I did do a bit of restoration on the surf-ski as well as it had been out in the elements for a few years and needed some TLC. It looks nice now though and the lean-to proved a nice workshop space to work on it.

The new lean-to also means that I now have some room in my shed again so will be able to do some much needed work on my bikes too. All in all it should prove to be a very useful storage space and certainly looks a lot nicer than it did when we started.

Before & After

That’s pretty much the lean-to build complete. I’ve just added a couple of wooden end pieces to  hopefully prevent the wind from getting under the polycarbonate sheeting and that’s it done. Although I do want to add gates to the front, but may need some help from my Dad to do that!

Looks very good ,neat and tidy.Bet you lost weight doing all that in the heat. Maybe I should try that instead of sitting in the garden”playing “with the little ones …no changed my mind already. X
