Camping on Anglesey

Anna and I were off work on Friday, so we made a last minute decision to go away for a couple of days. We didn’t have too many plans and things were a bit rushed, but camping on Anglesey was chosen. I found what looked like a nice campsite and made the necessary bookings. The weather looked good and things were set.

Camping on Anglesey

Thursday was a busy day at work for me – working one day a week at the moment is nice thanks to all the time off in lieu that I’m owed, but it does mean that there is a lot of catching up to be done on that day! Anna was at home trying to pack the car ready to go, but what with hair dressing appointments and lots of other distractions she wasn’t quite ready when I got home. After a bit of last minute packing we were ready and headed off for the 2½ hour drive to the campsite. We found the site without too many problems and I was surprised to see that it was exactly where I had finished my last coast path run. I did know this to a certain extent as part of the plan for the camping trip was to continue with my run around the Wales Coast Path. What I didn’t realise when I booked it was that it was EXACTLY at the spot that I’d finished last time.

We were staying at Pen y Bont campsite at Four Mile Bridge. The site itself was nice, right on the banks of the inland sea. It had a smal toilet and shower block, some water taps and a nice large area of grass. The pitches were well spaced and there was a huge area of grass in the middle of the field that wasn’t used for tents or caravans. Most people were in caravans or campers, but there were a few other tents too. The field was edged by the inland sea along which ran the Coast Path, right by Four Mile Bridge. The water was looking calm and perfect for canoeing or swimming – we should have taken the canoe and some wetsuits with us. Because of this we were making plans to come back with a few more toys before the tent was even erected.

An hour later, the tent was up, the awning was up, the beds were ready and our home for the next couple of days was complete. We therefore headed in Valley to find somewhere to eat.

We found a pub on the corner of the crossroads and had a nice meal there. The burgers were lovely. We then popped into the Spar for some supplies and headed back to the tent for the night. We did a little bit of Pokémon hunting as well and hatched a new Pokémon for us from an egg. First new Pokémon of the trip was a Ponyta.

An early morning Coast Path Run

As usual I was up nice and early the next morning and headed off for a run around part of Holy Island before the sun was up. To be honest it was still a little dark to start with but that meant I got to experience sunrise on Holy Island as I ran 11 miles along the Coast Path from Four Mile Bridge to Trearddur Bay and then back along the road to the campsite.

I was back at the tent before 7:30am so most people including Anna and Morgan were still in their beds. Perfect, one of the objectives for coming here completer and the day had hardly started.

Pokémon Hunting in Portmeirion

The only other objectives for camping on Anglesey was to visit Portmeirion and to catch some new Pokémon. We’d already found a new Pokémon, so now it was just Portmeirion to do. We’d booked tickets for Portmeirion for the Friday so after breakfast, we piled into the car, put the phones and battery packs on to charge and headed across Anglesey towards the mainland. Once back on the mainland we headed through Snowdonia, along the banks of Llyn Cwellyn and into Penrhyndeudreath and then Portmeirion.

We then had a pleasant day exploring the buildings and gardens of Portmeirion, soaking in the atmosphere, eating, drinking and of course hunting for Pokémon hunting in Portmeirion. We found plenty but I’ll save the details for my post about Portmeirion.

Chilling at the Campsite

After the drive back, Anna snoozed in the tent whilst Morgan and I played football for a bit and then headed off for a walk (hunting for Pokémon) along the banks of the Inland Sea.

The sun was shining, it was hot but there was now a gentle breeze that cooled us. There weren’t many Pokémon around so we used some incense to bring them to us and managed to find another new one, this time a Kabuto.

As we came back, some people were heading out windsurfing in what was now a strong breeze. Strong enough for me to have to make some adjustments to the tent. I also once again wished we’d brought some water craft with us.

We then headed into Trearddur Bay so that I could show Anna and Morgan some of the things I’d seen on my morning run and to look for somewhere to eat. Anna and I came here for geology field trips, but we didn’t remember it being nearly so big. I’m sure it was just a fairly deserted little bay with a hotel and a campsite before. It was 20 years ago though and now it’s quite a large village. We didn’t really find anywhere that we liked the look of to eat though so ended up back in the same place as the night before.

Homeward Bound via Caernarfon

Saturday dawned in glorious fashion with wall to wall sunshine, barely a breeze and very warm. The Inland Sea was once again looking inviting. I was up early but didn’t risk another coast path run as my achilles had been a little sore after yetsterdays run, Instead I ate breakfast and read my book under the tent awning.

We were due to head home today though so packed up the tent and loaded the car before heading across Anglesey once more and then on to Caernarfon.

Caernarfon Castle

Caernarfon Castle

We strolled along the banks of the Menai Straits for a bit and then headed into the town and into the castle. The castle was good with loads to explore, but Morgan was a little reluctant to go anywhere high within it. We then had lunch and ice creams in the town before making the 2 hour drive home through a sweltering Wales. We would have stayed longer in Caernarfon but Anna and Morgan weren’t keen on the high bits of the castle and I had been told that my new bike was ready for collection. If I could get home in good time I could get to the shop to collect it. We made it with plenty of time to spare so once we were home I headed off for the hour drive to the shop to get my new bike while Anna unpacked the car. I then drove the hour back home with my new bike in the car and that was our camping on Anglesey trip complete. the good thing was it was still only Saturday evening so we have Sunday free as well.
