Turkey Dinner at Winter Stream Farm

As usual before Christmas, we head to the South West to see my family and go out for a Christmas meal. This year it was at the Winter Stream Farm not far from Winterbourne.

We set off from Aberystwyth after work on Friday, just a little later than usual as Morgan now has a cornet lesson after school. The traffic was good though and we were at my parents house just less than 3 hours later, where we had dinner and a chat and Morgan played a few tunes on his cornet for everyone.

Saturday was spent chilling and wandering around the shops at The Mall. Our annual outing to the big smoke and a proper shopping mall – not something we do often, and not something we’re particularly good at either. Everyone else seems to be buckling under the weight of their shopping bags. We spent most of the time buying nothing, but did have quite a splurge in the M&S food hall where we bought lots of nice treats ready for Christmas thanks to Anna’s Mum. We then headed back to my parents house where we had a snooze. I was still suffering with the lurgy so wasn’t up to much. I did think of doing a geocache but no one wanted to join me so we spent most the afternoon doing very little, before heading off en masse to the Winter Stream Farm restaurant for dinner.

Carvery at the Winter Stream Farm

There were sixteen of us altogether for dinner. Me, Anna and Morgan, My Mum and Dad, Jason, Jennie, Megan, Harry, Charlie and Jack, Trudi, Kia, Max and Ryder, and Shaun. Brad and Eloise couldn’t make it. After drinks and a bit of a wait the starters came out. All very nice, soups, pate, chicken strips and for me garlic mushrooms – although I did try some of my Dad’s chicken strips. Then it was onto the Winter Stream Farm carvery which of course resulted in a huge plate of food. It’s so difficult not to go overboard with a carvery. I wasn’t even hungry, but by the time they had put turkey and gammon on my plate, along with two yorkshire puddings and two pigs in blankets things were already mounting up.

The veggies are the best bit for me though and with sprouts, cauliflower cheese, parsnips, broccoli, carrot and swede, cheesey bubble and squeak, onions, green beans and red cabbage, we were already running out of room on the plates. And that was before 5 different types of potato. Roasties of course, mustard potatoes, boiled potatoes, BBQ potatoes and mash. All topped with loads of gravy and cranberry sauce, although there were plenty of other sauces too.

I of course cleared my plate but I don’t think anyone else did.

Colossal Puddings

Whilst at the bar and getting our carvery I happened to notice two glass cabinets full of cakes and ice cream. The ice cream one was impressive with a massive array of delicious looking ice creams in a myriad of colours and flavours. It did say it was only for display though. Similarly, the cakes in the display cabinet were a ridiculous size and once again looked as though they were display only. In fact both of the cabinets had a kind of over the top Willy Wonka feel to them so other than a cursory glance I didn’t take that much notice. I didn’t want to get my hopes up after all.

We chose our puddings fromt he menu and then out they came. Now, I’m almost always disappointed by the size of puddings. They are never as big as they look in the pictures, never as big as I want them. It usually turns out OK though as I’m the only one who thinks that so I often end up with everyones leftovers to supplement my own. When in New Zealand I was fairly happy with the sizes of slices of cakes but here I never am. However, when these came out they were colossal. I couldn’t quite believe my eyes. Those huge towering cakes in the display cabinet were indeed the size of the cakes we were getting, and despite the cake being about 10 inches tall, they didn’t give you a think slice of them either. These were MASSIVE. I’m not kidding you, even I was impressed, and that really is saying something.

The puddings are so big that they pretty much bring out a doggy bag for you by default. Many of our party, and people on other tables were taking their puddings home with them as they were just too big to eat. I did of course eat mine, a massive slice of ‘Avon Gorge Fudge Cake’ with sticky chocolate sauce and ice cream. Anna didn’t even make a start on her huge piece of Toffee Waffle Cheesecake.Yep, that’s right, toffee waffles and cheesecake in one delicious, crazily large pudding. In fact, we shared half of it for breakfast the next day, and then shared the other half of it for pudding after dinner.

All of the puddings were the same huge size. The profiteroles looked pretty impressive, and even the scoops of ice cream for the children were massive. I didn’t ever look at all of the flavours available but each of them three scoops each from the selection. The people serving them did manage to get them a little mixed up though so had to redo them which meant that they all ended up with about 6 scoops each. They couldn’t even eat the three scoops though so I ended up helping them out so finished off what had already been a huge meal with various scoops of delicious ice cream – Belgian Chocolate flavour, Toffee flavour, Cherry Flavour, Bubblegum flavour, Crunchie flavour and some mint choc chip too.

We came away impressed at the Winter Stream Farm.
