Holiday to Dorset – Dorchester & Chesil Beach

I can’t believe it’s Friday already, we may have packed a lot into our holiday so far, but there was still so much to do. Today started with an early morning walk for me where I found three geocaches and as usual returned with croissants for breakfast for Anna and Morgan. We then headed off to Dorchester.

Dorchester

I’ve never really explored Dorchester much, but we found a geocache here, walked through the town and went to the museum. The town itself seemed really nice so we did some window shopping and enjoyed the early morning bustle. We had planned to do a Wherigo Cache, but couldn’t get the app working properly so gave up on this one. We did visit the site of an old Roman Amphitheatre though whilst trying to get it working.

I had been to the museum before and we spent some time here looking at the various exhibits. Morgan always enjoys a trip around a museum and this was no exception. He like the roman remains and of course the fossils.

After the museum we looked for somewhere for lunch and found a lovely little cafe called the Nappers Mite which had a little courtyard that was bathed in sunshine. The food was good too.

Chesil Beach

After lunch we walked back through Dorchester, jumped in the car and headed off to Abbotsbury where I wanted to go to the Sub-Tropical Gardens. Once we got there and saw the price of entry though we decided against it and instead walked down to Chesil beach where we sat playing with the pea-sized gravel that makes up Chesil Beach here. The sub-tropical gardens did look good, so it was a shame to miss out on them but with only a part of the afternoon left we probably couldn’t have done it justice and certainly wouldn’t have got our money’s worth considering the cost of entry.

We then drove back to Portland and stopped at the Chesil Beach Visitor Centre there for an ice-cream and another wander up onto the now much larger pebbles of Chesil Beach.

Swimming again

The plan was then to go for a run along the run course for Sunday’s Triathlon followed by a swim in the Osprey Leisure Centre, but the leisure centre pool was closed, so instead I went for an easy run back to the Chesil Beach Visitor Centre, and then we headed off to a swimming pool in Weymouth where I did a little swim session and Morgan suddenly decided he liked swimming lengths too.

We then headed off to Langton Herring for dinner in the Elm Tree Inn before heading back to the hotel. I popped over to Sainsburys to get some pudding and returned with a huge Apple and Blackberry Pie, A big tub of Custard to go with it and an equally large tub of Cookie Dough, Fudge and Chocolate Sauce Ice cream too.  Most of which I then ate!
