A Nice Ride Home

After our quick trip to Bristol and a lovely morning watching the mass ascent at the Bristol Balloon Fiesta, I decided to cycle much of the way home.

I drove from Bristol into Wales and on towards Crickhowell. Anna doesn’t really like driving on motorways so with the main roads done an onto typical welsh roads we stopped just before Crickhowell where I jumped out, mounted my bike and headed off into the hills. Anna and Morgan were in the car and we arranged to meet in Rhayader for lunch a couple of hours later.

It was a lovely day for a ride, light winds, sunny and fairly quiet on the roads as I made my way up over the Brecon Beacons and then down in towards Builth Wells. I was making good progress and was soon looking forward to lunch in Rhayader. Anna and Morgan stopped in Builth Wells for picnic supplies and then stopped again in Rhayader so had only been waiting for 20 minutes or so when I arrived. We ate lunch by the riverside and then I once again headed off, this time we went different ways. Anna and Morgan headed directly home along the main roads, I headed off along the mountain road, starting with a long climb up to the top and then a descent towards Cwmystwyth. A few climbs and descents later and I emerged in Devil’s Bridge. I then headed into Aberystwyth for a loop of the town and then on towards Borth and finally home. It was just short of an 85 mile ride in the end with a fair bit of climbing, all at a relaxed speed so it took just under 5 hours. Not a bad way to spend the day.
