Sunshine, Geocaching and a Walk Recce

We have a night hike planned for the Scouts soon so thought we had better recce the route that I had in mind sometime soon. Sunday afternoon looked like the best time to do it as we would have a couple of hours free.

I did my usual early morning run and then swim followed by a bacon sandwich and coffee in Machynlleth and then we had a quick lunch at home before setting off. I loaded a few geocaches into my iPhone as well as we would be passing a few that we missed last time we went for a walk in this area. We then drove into Tre Ddol, parked by the church and set off into the hills.

The walk started with a nice steep climb up along a bridle way into Cwm Clettwr Nature Reserve. The nature reserve has seen some work on it recently and has some newly marked walks. We followed the bridal way though with a few stops for geocaches.

The geocaches were all caches in ‘The  Chocolate Trail’ and we did numbers 1-5 , in the correct order. All were easy to find and in good condition. The names of the caches were:

  • Raspberry Mojito
  • Griotte Deluxe
  • Cognac Cuddle
  • Hazeldamia
  • Champagne Truffle

We didn’t take or leave anything in any of them but they did provide an excuse for a little stop and a breather now and then in the glorious winter sunshine. There were some nice views North towards snow-capped Cadair Idris too.

We checked out a few possible routes for the Scouts across the top, deciding on the slightly longer but probably easier to find in the dark route for them and then crested the top of the ridge for some amazing views out across the fields towards Ynyslas. We could just about make out the location of our house from here.

We then descending back into the woodlands where the trees were covered in moss and lichen, along with a few bracket fungi too. Morgan of course climbed a tree as we headed back down to the easier paths through the woods and back to the car.

Once back at home I quickly baked a batch of lemon, lime and poppy seed cakes. Morgan wants some for his birthday party so I had to test them as cupcake sized cakes as well as the usual loaf tin sized cake. They working fine though and tasted just as lovely as usual. There are already a few missing and they have yet to cool!

All in all a good day out in the hills for us with some nice weather for a change. We have a route for the Night Hike with the Scouts too. They will have to get a bit of a move on to do it in under 2 hours though!
