A Pleasant Pheasant Present

Ha, try saying that lots of times:

“A Pleasant Pheasant Present,  A Pleasant Pheasant Present, A Pleasant Pheasant Present, ”

We tired to sell a few jars of our limited supply of honey at the weekend. We had quite a few people say they wanted some and there was plenty of bartering going on. Shem wanted some and said that he had a pheasant we could have too, so on Saturday he popped around with a pheasant for us and left with some honey. We have to admit that none of us have ever prepared a pheasant before, so we looked it up on YouTube and soon had a plan of attack.

The pheasant had been hanging for a few days and therefore ready to eat so we decided to prepare it and eat it that day. Skinning it and preparing it actually turned out to be quite easy and before long, what had once been a rather handsome looking bird was now a bag of head, feathers, feet and wings, a bowl of entrails and a some meat ready for roasting.

There isn’t a huge amount of meat on a pheasant, but once cooked there was plenty for the three of us with quite a bit left over for sandwiches or possibly a soup. It cooked well and best of all tasted nice too. Morgan wasn’t at all phased by the butchery and preparation side of it either which is good as I think its important for children to realise where their food comes from. Not that he was paying that much attention either thanks to the distraction of Minecraft on his computer. He did see the process though, was quite interested in the entrails and ate some pheasant for dinner too.
