Bank Holiday Gardening

I’m sure we weren’t the only ones, but we spent much of Bank Holiday Monday in the garden. I also went for a gorgeous swim in the sea. The water temperature was up to 9°C and the air temperature made it to 14.9°C so the cold was no longer an issue and I had a pleasant swim in the sunshine. I also did a bike ride as well and it was nice to be out in just shorts and short-sleeved top without feeling cold at any stage.

Things are coming on well in the garden now and it is beginning to look nice so it was good to be able to spend some time in it enjoying it rather than working too hard to get on top of it. Although the loud bangs and shaking thanks to a warship off the coast kind of ruined the peace a little. Morgan and I sowed lots of seeds into pots and labelled them all judiciously. Runner Beans, Exotic Beans, Pumpkins, Swede, Parsnips and Sweet Peas were all sown and placed in the greenhouse. Many of the seeds we put in the greenhouse for the Scouts are beginning to germinate as well which is good.

We have started to harden off our pelargonuims. These have been sat in the conservatory all winter merrily flowering away so the plan now is to harden them off by placing them outside during the day and then in June they will be moved to the graveled seating area for the summer. Elsewhere, now that May is here the bluebells are bursting into life and the Forget-me-nots are creating a lovely blueish mist in various places around the garden. The purple Grape Hyacinths are doing well also.

It’s not all blues and purples though as the Marsh Marigolds, Primroses and the last of the daffodils are adding a splash of yellow and the Saxifrages are doing well with a lovely pink hue around the edge of one of the borders.

There is also of course plenty of fresh spring green everywhere with new shoots and sprouts from almost everything. I divided some of the Hostas and replanted them into new pots so we now have quite a few of these. Their  purple, green and white spear-like shoots are opening up well and look full of potential. I’ll need some more slug protection for them soon though. The giant herb lovage is already getting quite large and the Welsh Onions are beginning to flower. The other Alium family plants are growing fast as well, with the chives almost flowering and the ornamental Aliums along the conservatory wall not far behind.

Trees are bursting into life all around as well, with fresh green leaves on the Oak Tree, Birch Tree and Cherry Tree as well as in the hedges. The cherry tree will soon be covered in pure white blossom, but it isn’t out quite yet.

It’s amazing what a few sunny warm days can do, the garden has been transformed from the bleak, cold wet views of winter to a wondrous spring vision… It wasn’t just the weather that did this of course, some hard work on my part has gone into it as well!
