Bee Garden

Chives

Chives

At last, the weather has changed and the sun has come out. The temperature even got into double figures today, although according to the weather station it did only hit 14.6°C. It’s supposed to be nice all week as well and will make it into the high teens temperature wise.

I managed to spend a bit of time in the garden planting things out and building various bits of bee hive. It was good to see the bees making the most of the sunshine whilst I was out there. Despite out best efforts at creating a bee-friendly garden and having 3 hives of honey bees at the bottom of it we don’t actually see that many bees on the flowers in the garden. We do see one or two, but they seem to head off elsewhere most of the time. I guess it’s all to do with the fact that they exhibit floral fidelity so look out for bigger patches of one species, or maybe our flowers just aren’t good enough.

Aliums

Aliums

There were a few in the garden today though working the poached egg plant flowers and also quite a few on the chives too.

As well as building a stand for the hives and a whole brood box full of frames, I planted out some Lobelia, tidied up the Pelargoniums that were worst hit by last weeks hail storm, planted out some beetroot, and spinach along with some onion sets into the raised bed and also sowed some swede there too. Whilst working on the raised bed I harvested a whole load of spring onions as well, we’d best get eating those.. I planted up another couple of bags of potatoes and yet another courgette as well, but we have far too many courgette plants so I’ll give a few of those away.

It’s amazing what a bit of sunshine can do to lift the soul and make the garden come alive. The aliums along the conservatory are beginning to put on a show, and we’ve seen a few bees on those as well.
