Aberystwyth Park Run

I’ve been looking with envy at the various Park Runs around the country lately and had even thought about organising one myself in Aberystwyth but it looks as though someone else is about to do all of the hard work for me. There’s news about that someone is organising a Park Run. The Aberystwyth Athletics Club website states:

“As part of the UK national Parkrun scheme events will commence in Aberystwyth in the not too distant future.”

Sounds exciting, so I registered on the Park Run website this morning, and sure enough, as part of the sign up procedure you have to select your local Park Run and Aberystwyth is listed there.

What is Park Run?

Parkrun organise free, weekly, 5km timed runs around the world. They are open to everyone, free, and are safe and easy to take part in.

These events take place in pleasant parkland surroundings and they encourage people of every ability to take part; from those taking their first steps in running to Olympians; from juniors to those with more experience; ParkRun welcome everyone.

I’ve seen lots of people writing about entering them and they always seem like fun so it’ll be good to have one in this part of the world.

Here’s some info from the Aber Athletics Club Newsletter:

“It’s official – the first Aberystwyth Parkrun will take place on Saturday 1st September at 9am in Plascrug – the town end by the green gates. Our “Aberystwyth Parkrun” page is being created on the parkrun website http://www.parkrun.com/. The national Parkrun manager, Tom Williams, will be present for our first event.

Financial support has come from Sport Wales, Ceredigion Actif / Ceredigion County Council and from the University Harriers – who will also participate and help to marshal when term starts. There has been a lot of interest, both from within Aberystwyth AC and from outside the club so we will need to run the route before the 1st September with as many people as possible to find out where the congestion points are, where we need to place signs, etc. Hopefully they will stop digging it up soon and remove those yellow barriers………… then I’ll send a message out to all of you (and bring your friends!) to test the route, ideally at 9am on a Saturday morning for realistic conditions.

To enter the real event, you’ll need to log into the parkrun website, register as a runner, and print out the barcode that is allocated to you. It is FREE to register and once you have a barcode you can run at any parkrun event in the world! here’s the link http://www.parkrun.org.uk/aberystwyth
