Palm Tree Relocation

After a morning bike ride on Saturday, we made the most of the glorious Spring day and did some work in the garden.

I’d already done some work on the water feature before my ride and while I was out Anna and Morgan had been busy sowing seeds. I’m not 100% sure what they’ve planted but I think it is:

Peas
Beans
Courgettes
Pumpkin
Chillis
Tomatoes

All are in little pots ready to germinate and we will then transplant them into either the raised beds out the back or some new beds that we intend to build soon.

Palm Tree

In the afternoon I did lots of tidying up in the garden, and then set about a task I’ve been meaning to do for a while. Moving a Palm Tree that was bought for us by Helen and Steve as a wedding present (in 2004). It was a fairly small tree at the time but has since being doing well in its sheltered little spot in the garden. Unfortunately though it was a little too crowded where it was and now that the tree itself has grown considerably and the plants around it have grown too, it was not only getting swamped by the other plants, but it couldn’t be seen either.

I’d decided that I wanted to move the palm into the new bed that we built last year. It would be easier than moving the Oak Tree that was next to it and it would act as a nice architectural feature plant in this bed. I’d been putting it off however as I wasn’t sure how well it would cope with a brutal replanting procedure. It had got to the stage where it was no good where it was so yesterday we moved it. It was pretty difficult to get out but we got some nice long tap roots with it and moved it to its new location.

It was much bigger than we thought it was but looks good now that it is on display. I only hope it survives the relocation and enjoys its new sunny spot. It isn’t quite so sheltered where it is though so I hope it doesn’t mind the wind too much.

Hiya

I’m really pleased the palm has survived and grown so much, good job they are hardy after the winter we’ve had. Hope it does well in it’s
new spot and makes sunny Borth look tropical 🙂
