Putting in the Miles

I’m toying with the idea of doing a 12 hour solo MTB race next year, so though I’d better start doing some slightly longer rides.

Up until now, anything over 15 miles was considered a longer ride and I very rarely do a ride that far. So, yesterday I was up at 5am as usual and decided to get out there early and put some miles in. I headed off in the dark and rode up to Nant yr Arian via Borth, Talybont and Bont Goch and then the Bont Goch climbs. I then did 3 laps of the Pendam Trail as the sun came up before headed back down the Bont Goch Climb and home via Bow Street.

Four and Half hours in the saddle and a total of 43.88 miles and I felt fine. I was even back home fairly early so didn’t lose too many brownie points. It was a gorgeous autumn morning, but freezing in the hills. Plynlimon was dusted with white and I looked forward to any sections that were in the sun just to warm me up a bit. I managed to loose the Pro Pedal lever on my rear shock whilst up there as well, so will have to buy a new one.

I feel fine this morning and ready for another ride, although I don’t think I’ve warmed back up yet. Mind you, 4.5 hours in the saddle is one thing, 12 hours is going to be quite another, but I have to start somewhere.
