Pine Beauty

I was looking up the details of the Pine Beauty moth that I caught in our trap over the weekend. The 1988 Nature Conservancy Council publication “The Moths of Ceredigion” by Adrian Fowles says that the Pine Beauty (Panolis flammea) is unusually rare in the county and that only eight specimens had been recorded.

I’m sure that is no longer the case and they are probably widespread here now, but it was a lovely moth and if indeed they are more widespread, it is good to see some wildlife on the increase for a change.

Just heard back from Mike who ‘got me into’ mothing in the first place and is the CCW Senior Reserve Manager for the Dyfi area. He says:

Good record. I’ve never caught [one] a Pine Beauty, and don’t know if anyone else has in Ceredigion recently. Just set a trap near some pines on the bog and I’ll let you know if I have any luck.

It will be nice either way. If he does get some then they are on the increase, if not then my record is an important one.

    Al.
