Moth Recording in Ceredigion – A County First

I’ve just had an e-mail from the County Moth Recorder in VC46 comfirming that my recent record of a Chamomile Shark is the first ever recorded in the County. Always exciting when that happens.

Alan: Have been conferring with Ian over the last week, pondering your Chamomile Shark record which is a first for VC46. Confusion could arise with C.umbratica, which makes your photograph so important, as also does the date of capture (April/May) – umbratica flies later (June /July). The ‘UK Moths’ distribution map also helps, showing records creeping along the n. Pembs coastline, with another two in north Wales – so there is no reason why chamomillae should not occur in Ceredigion. All these positive observations enable us to confirm your record which has been incorporated into the VC46 verified County list of macro-moths. With many thanks, until your next offering. . . . Peter

We seem fairly certain that my record of the micro moth Dasystoma salicella was a new County Record as well.
