Garden Updates – Propagation – Things for Free

Don’t worry, as well as buying plants from the garden centre at the weekend, whilst working in the garden to plant them out I also made the most of this years growth and got some things for free.

First up I sorted out the compost bins and got loads of bag fulls of compost. Some of which I shall add to the beds as an mulch. The rest I’ll keep in the bags and use when plating out news plants or it’ll end up in the raised bed out the back.

I’ve divided a big purple iris that had outgrown it’s current home. I’ve left a bit where it was and have rehoused another bit elsewhere in the garden. We also had a clumps of chives that needed dividing. I’ve dug these up and have created several new clumps of chives around the garden, all of which will of course be much loved by the bees and butterflies next year.

I’ve even collected a bag full of Lupin seeds. The Lupins did well this year, so if I remember to sow the seeds in the spring we could have hundreds of Lupin seedlings next year. Some of which will go in the garden, others will go to friends and family or school fetes etc. and we may even end up with a stall of garden produce out the front! Mind you we don’t have a suitable potting shed or greenhouse yet so quite where I’ll house them all has yet to be decided.

There’s still plenty to do in the garden, but considering the fact that we thought very little would grow here due to the wind, salt and poor soil, we aren’t doing too badly so far.
