Free Stuff – From Feeding the Birds

Those of you who feed the birds will know that it can get quite expensive.

They certainly get through it quick enough at certain times of the year – they’re getting through it pretty quickly at the moment – and quality bird food isn’t cheap. It’s nice then when you get something back from it other than the pleasure of seeing the birds enj0ying it.

During the summer we had a lovely display of huge sunflowers in the garden. I didn’t plant them so we can only assume that they must have seeded themselves from seeds within the bird food. The flower heads were massive and we let them go to seed.

Over the weekend we harvested them, collected a load for yourselves and roasted them and they tast lovely. Thousands of delicious, healthy sunflower seeds from one or two rogue bits of brid food.

Of course, there were far too many for us so I’ve hung the remaining seed heads on the pergola next to the bird feeders so that the birds can reap the benefits too. It’ll save me some money on bird food and who knows, one or two seeds may end up sowing themselves again.
