Eskimo Surf Session

Just got back from a surf session – Yep, it was cold!

The waves were really nice though so it had to be done.

I’d like to say that it was lovely out there and once I was in the water it wasn’t that cold, but that would be lying. My hands were in agony the whole time and every time I ducked under the water I felt sick. The first paddle out was painful as my face froze, my hands started hurting and the nausea kicked in. I then caught a lovely left-hander and thought that maybe next time would be better. Paddling out again was just as bad though. I could no longer feel my hands and I still felt sick every time I duck-dived. I could also feel every little hole in my wetsuit as water seeped in here and there.

It’s not surprising it was cold, the air temperature was minus 5ÂșC and it hasn’t been much above that for several days. The edge of the sea was lined with ice and ther were big blocks of ice floating about in the shallows.

I did catch one more really nice wave, but that was enough for me. I think I’m getting too old for this sort of thing!
