Plight of the Bees

The bees we had on loan for a couple of months have now gone back to their owner.

Unfortunately the weather was terrible while we had them and they didn’t fare too well. The bees were pretty hungry and there were quite a few dead ones in the hive. They did have some stores but nothing that could be harvested. Not a great sign but other local hives didn’t do too well either.

Those further inland that managed to get to some Himalayan Balsam did pretty well though. I guess we’ll just have to keep a close eye on them here and be prepared to feed them whenever there is a dearth. Either that or encourage the farmer to plant his field with Rape!

Hopefully we’ll get a couple of hives set up and ready to go over the winter and then get our own bees first thing next spring. I just hope we get some decent weather for them and that we manage to get some Ynyslas honey.
