New lens – Canon EF-S 60mm Macro Review
My new lens arrived at the weekend, a couple of days after buying it which, considering the postal strikes was pretty good going.
It’s a Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM lens which I’m hoping will serve as a portrait and general photography lens as well as a macro. On my cropped sensor camera it has an effective focal length of 96mm so should be perfect. I haven’t had much chance to play with it yet, but a couple of initial snapshots that I took using it look good. It is certainly very sharp, the auto-focus seems quick and quiet thanks to the USM motor and the persistent manual focus over-ride is a nice feature too.
In comparison to the other lenses I have (a Canon 18-55mm that came with my camera and a Tamron 70-300) it seems to be much much sharper. Of course, as an expensive prime lens rather than a budget zoom lens that is to be expected, but I think I’m going to like it. Trouble is, I now want some more expensive lenses!

We’ve all been there (sadly)
Along with my bike obsession, windsurf obsession, Apple Mac obsession etc. etc. etc…. Destitution here I come!

Looks really good Alan, been toying with which new lens to buy myself. I only have the Canon 18-55mm lens that came with the camera but a guy that I work with has been lending me a few different lenses to play with over the last couple of weeks before I make a decision.
It’s all down to how much you want to spend I guess?
Its made me realise that the 18-55 kit lens isn’t very good.. Sorry Trudie, you’re going to have to splash some more cash! I’m not the only one to have commented on this, but it doesn’t seem to matter what I do with the kit lens, if I enlarge the photos they always seem a little unsharp. he 70-300 Tamron that I have is quite a bit better, but so far my new prime lens is miles better.
Next on the list for me is the Canon 10-22mm!

I considered the Canon 10-22mm but ended up going for the Sigma alternative. I’ve never have an issue with it and love the photos it gives. Plus it saved me £200 on the Canon.
Just a thought…
Don’t worry, when I have the necessary funds I will shop around a bit and look at the other alternatives as well.

No you’re right Alan, I haven’t really been happy with any of the pics I’ve taken with that 18-55mm lens.
Just bought a Canon EF50mm F/1.8 lens today, so gonna try that out tomorrow. And a snip at £85!
Oooh… Nice. Let me know how much of an improvement it is on the kit lens, and I’ll look forward to seeing some of the results.
