Dysynni Valley – Our first geocoin

San Diego GeocoinWe had another nice weekend here in West Wales. My parents came up on Saturday night to see us, so Saturday was a bit hectic, trying out the new tumble drier (which still makes far too much noise), tidying the house, mowing the lawn etc. Sunday morning was equally hectic as me and my dad drilled a hole in the side of the house for the tumble drier vent. We then all headed off on a geocaching expedition in the afternoon.

As I’ve said before, geocahcing for us is really an excuse to go for a walk as a family and enjoy some time together. The thrill of the hunt just adds to that and gets us out when otherwise we wouldn’t bother. Sunday was a lovely day for it so we drove around to Tywyn, had sunday lunch in a hotel there and then parked up by the River Dysynni and headed off in search of two geocaches, ‘The Otter Spotter’ and ‘Bagpipes and Flamingoes’. Both were found really easily and the walk itself was nice. There were a few cows to avoid on the path which Morgan was a little unsure of, loads of bird life to watch, including lots of swans, a large flock of Canada Geese, some herons and even a kingfisher.

The second of the geocaches had a geocoin in it. These are items that people place in geocaches, they have unique serial numbers on them allowing them to be tracked from cache to cache. When you find one you can take it with you and then place it in another cache elsewhere, you also get to log its find in your profile on the geocaching website, so adding to your overall list of finds and ‘trackable items’. I can see how people get obsessed with finding and logging such things and I guess it adds an extra sense of achievement to your walk.

The coin itself is actually quite nice, well made and it even has a picture of a surfer on it which makes it quite relevant to me. I shall drop it off in a different geocache soon.

Morgan wasn’t too impressed with the walk though, he whinged most of the way, and fell into some brambles! We were then all witness to a spectacular sunset before heading off home via Happy Valley.
