It was lovely to see so many butterflies feasting on the sedum in the garden last night… And the sedum is covered in them again this morning.
Let me know if I’ve got any identifications wrong.

Nice photos, but how can you tell them apart, they all look the same to me!

I was thinking exactly the same thing! They all look the same to me!

Tch tch tch!!! Admittedly they all have patterns composed of orange, black, white and brown, but the patterns are quite distinctive.
The Tortoiseshell is easy to identify as it has black and white bands of pretty much equal size along the front of its wings.
The red Admiral is very dark black, with red and white markings on the wing tips.
The Painted lady is generally brownish in colour with black and white wing tips.
I’ll keep an eye out for some other species today!

There you go, I’ve added some links to some Butterfly Identification books from Amazon!

Plenty of moths around as well, but getting a photo of them is difficult. They seem to fly off as soon as the mirror moves and therefore have gone before the photo is taken.
Plenty of Small Whites about and I saw (but didn’t photograph) a Peacock butterfly too. They seem to be taking over out there!

My sedum had 15 wasps on it y’day afternoon – butterflies aren’t getting a look in!
They are however loving the Buddleja. I think butterflies, in general, seem to have been having a great year all round.
Nice photo’s mate. I’ve just got a 450D, but still playing about with it at the mo.

Hi Trudie,
How are you liking the EOS 450D then? I like mine, although getting really REALLY pin sharp macro images doesn’t seem to be as easy at it should be.
Maybe I’m expecting a little too much!
